# The Best Nights Don't Need an Agenda

Some nights don't need much. 

A backyard.

A few chairs.

Something cold to drink.

A little fire.

And people who don't mind staying awhile.

Someone brings the snacks. Someone else brings another chair because apparently we have once again underestimated how many people are coming. 

The marshmallows come out.

The stories start.

Someone remembers something that happened twenty years ago and tells it as though nobody sitting around the fire has heard it at least fourteen times.  
We have.

We laugh anyway.

Because sometimes the story isn't even the point.

Being together is.

I think that's something worth remembering in a world that can make everything feel like it needs to be planned, photographed, optimized, scheduled or turned into an occasion.

It doesn't. Sometimes you can simply call a few people you love and say:

Come over. We're sitting outside.

That's the whole invitation.

Let the kids run around.  
Let the dog patrol the snack table like he's been hired by security.  
Burn a marshmallow.  
Make the ridiculous Reese's Cup s'more.  
Pull another chair into the circle.

And when the sun disappears, and the string lights come on, stay a little longer.

We remembered the neighborhoods and summer nights that became part of our stories.

Tonight, we get to make another one.  
Not because anything extraordinary happened.  
But because we were there.  
Together.  
Laughing.  
Living.  

And paying enough attention to realize:  
These are the good old days, too.  

Come over and live a little too.
