Notice Your Life While You're Living It
Nothing much happened tonight.
And I think that's why I liked it.
I sat outside long enough to hear the neighborhood settle down.
Cars stopped coming and going.
Porch lights clicked on.
Somewhere down the block, a screen door closed.
And then the crickets took over.
I had a glass of ice water beside me, the kind that's so cold the glass sweats faster than you can drink it.
A few fireflies were blinking around the yard.
The sky was clear enough to see the stars.
And for once, I wasn't trying to accomplish anything.
I wasn't planning tomorrow. I wasn't thinking about what still needed to be done.
I wasn't even particularly trying to relax.
I was just sitting there.
Existing.
Watching a tiny light blink across the yard.
Listening to crickets.
Looking up.
That's it.
And somewhere in all that nothing, I realized how good I felt.
Maybe we've gotten so accustomed to looking for the big moments that we forget how much life happens in the margins.
The ten minutes before you go inside.
The song coming through somebody's open window.
The first star you notice.
The cold glass in your hand.
The firefly that makes you stop mid-thought because—
Oh. Look at that.
Nothing happened tonight.
No milestone.
No big revelation.
No story anybody else would probably think worth telling.
But I was there for it.
And lately, I think that's becoming one of my favorite ways to live.
Come live a little.
